Shanna Patterson, MD, MS, joins our Board of Directors

The Foundation for Peripheral Neuropathy (FPN) welcomes Shanna K. Patterson, MD, MS, who joined our Board of Directors effective January 1, 2025. She brings an exceptional blend of clinical expertise, academic leadership, and a long-standing commitment to improving the lives of individuals living with peripheral neuropathy.

Patterson has deep roots in the neurology profession and community

Patterson currently serves as the Site Chair of the Department of Neurology for Mount Sinai West and Mount Sinai Morningside Operations, as well as the Director for Special Projects in System-wide Neurology Clinical Operations at Mount Sinai. She is an Associate Professor in the Department of Neurology at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai. 

Patterson completed her residency training in Neurology and a fellowship in Clinical Neurophysiology at Columbia University, with a focus on EMG and neuromuscular disorders. She holds subspecialty certifications from the American Board of Electrodiagnostic Medicine and Clinical Neurophysiology. 

Her professional affiliations include the American Association of Neuromuscular and Electrodiagnostic Medicine and the American Academy of Neurology. As a dedicated clinician and educator, Dr. Patterson specializes in general outpatient neurology with a focus on peripheral neuromuscular disease and electrodiagnostic testing. She has also authored chapters on EEG monitoring in the intensive care unit, the phrenic nerve, and neuromuscular junction disorders, further establishing herself as a thought leader in her field. 

A history of collaboration with FPN 

Patterson is no stranger to the Foundation for Peripheral Neuropathy. She has served as the organization’s Patient Education Advisor for several years, working closely with FPN to enhance patient understanding of peripheral neuropathy. You may have seen one of her many webinars or blog posts, where she has tackled topics such as treatment approaches, research updates, and symptom management. Through her work, Patterson has empowered countless patients and families with the knowledge and resources they need to better navigate their journey with peripheral neuropathy—all while advocating for improved care and outcomes. 

A vision for the future 

Patterson shared her deep commitment to FPN’s mission:

I am eager to contribute to a board that shares my dedication to advocacy, innovation, and improving the quality of life for individuals affected by this condition. My clinical experience, leadership roles, and passion for patient care position me to provide valuable insights and guidance to the organization.”

Patterson’s professional achievements reflect her dedication to advancing the field of neurology and improving patient care. As a Communication Ambassador within Mount Sinai’s Department of Neurology, she has trained providers in effective physician-patient communication, fostering trust and clarity in care delivery. 

Her leadership roles have equipped her with invaluable experience in strategic planning, stakeholder management, and organizational development. Patterson’s commitment to collaboration, inclusivity, and transparency aligns seamlessly with FPN’s mission and values.
