The Foundation for Peripheral Neuropathy (FPN) is continuing its peripheral neuropathy advocacy campaign in 2022, to make funding available for research on peripheral neuropathy.
FPN (and the scientific community) were pleased to see that over $8 million was awarded to research focused on PN. Additionally, this funding was provided under the Department of Defense’s (DoD) Peer Reviewed Medical Research Program (PRMRP) for 2021.
Congress took action to designate ‘peripheral neuropathy’ as a condition eligible for research funding under the PRMRP again for 2022. We’re actively broadcasting the availability of funds to the peripheral neuropathy scientific community, and we anticipate increased grant funding for peripheral neuropathy research in the coming year.
But we can’t stop now.
To ensure that peripheral neuropathy remains in the plans for the PRMRP as an eligible condition in 2023, we must emphasize that even though we’re pleased with the funding for 2021 and the continuation of PN’s eligibility in 2022, it is not a ‘done deal.’ Therefore, every year, we need to remind our senators about the importance of maintaining peripheral neuropathy’s eligibility for funding under this critical grant program.
What is the Peer-Reviewed Medical Research Program?
Every year, Congress designates dozens of specific conditions to be eligible for research dollars from the $370 million PRMRP. In 2021, Congress included peripheral neuropathy as a PRMRP research topic for the first time. Thanks to a national advocacy program initiated by the Foundation and carried forth by our friends and constituents, Congress took an interest in the disorder, particularly as it relates to members of the military. Subsequently, Congress approved peripheral neuropathy as an eligible condition for funding for the first time under this important research program!
In 2022, we felt ecstatic as the Senate once again included peripheral neuropathy among the conditions eligible for funding.
What is FPN’s 2022/2023 Advocacy Plan for Peripheral Neuropathy?
In 2022, we continue our efforts to raise awareness in the Congress about funding research on peripheral neuropathy. Through this awareness, we aim to maintain PN’s eligibility for research funding under the Department of Defense’s PRMRP. Additionally, we seek to expand funding availability through the National Institutes of Health.
How can you help advocate for peripheral neuropathy research?
To pave the way for more funding, maintain dialogue with senators and representatives in Washington, D.C. Thank them for including peripheral neuropathy in the DoD PRMRP for two years. Additionally, encourage their continued support to ensure eligibility for the program in 2023.
